Метод отбора гибридных клеток на селективной среде с гипоксантином, аминоптерином и тимидином (от начальных букв этих слов образована аббревиатура «НАТ») - например, в мутантной линии клеток мышей, у которой отсутствуют гены тимидинкиназы и гипоксантин-гуанин-фосфорибозилтрансферазы, способность расти в среде НАТ сохраняют только те гибридные клетки, которые включают хромосому 17 человека с данными генами дикого типа, поскольку они приобретают способность утилизировать экзогенный гипоксантин и тимидин (синтез этих эндогенных нуклеозидов подавлен аминоптерином); среда НАТ используется при получении гибридом, а получение монохромосомных соматических гибридов используется в генетическом картировании.
